Find the bytes that changed between two files

Compare binary files on Mac, check their size and SHA-256 fingerprints, and inspect changed bytes in a side-by-side hex view. Your files stay local.

The problem

Why the usual workflow gets in the way.

A game save and its backup can have the same name and size while holding different values. Opening them as text gives you little help when you need to find what changed.

The solution

How Diff Anything handles it.

Open both files in Diff Anything. Check File details to see whether they are identical, then use the hex view to inspect changed bytes. Click a byte to read its numeric values or jump directly to a known offset. Everything stays on your Mac, with no AI involved.

01 / Binary comparison on Mac

Check whether two files are identical

The tutorial starts with a game save and its backup. File details shows their sizes and SHA-256 fingerprints. The identical copies have no differences to review.

After the game updates the save, Reload reads the changed file again. The fingerprints now differ, and the hex view marks the changed bytes.

See exactly where the bytes changed

Both files appear side by side, with sixteen bytes per row and offsets at the left. Changed, inserted and deleted bytes are marked so you can inspect the part that differs.

The example changes five bytes. Close changes can appear as one region in the differences list; the individual bytes remain marked in the hex view.

03 / Binary comparison on Mac

Read bytes as numbers

Click a byte to open the data inspector. It shows hexadecimal, unsigned and signed 8-bit values, unsigned 16-bit and 32-bit values, and 32-bit floating-point values, with little-endian and big-endian interpretations where applicable.

The save-file example reads a level changing from 3 to 4 and coins from 120 to 1450. Entering 0x24 in Go to offset jumps to the play-time value. Hexadecimal and decimal offsets are accepted.

Free previews and Pro

Free allows 10 new comparison sessions per local day, files up to 5 MiB per side and the first 100 byte differences. Pro removes those preview and session limits and supports larger files within technical safety limits.

Clear answers

Common questions about compare two binary files on Mac.

Can the inspector tell me what a byte means in my file?

It reads the selected bytes as numeric types. Use the file format’s documentation to identify the fields and byte order. The level, coins and play-time labels come from the known save-file format used in this example.

Are the binary files uploaded for comparison?

No. Diff Anything reads and compares the files locally on your computer. Their contents are not sent to an AI model.

Three short steps

Check the files, inspect the bytes, read the values.

  1. 01

Click Compare two files and choose the backup and the current binary file.

  2. 02

Open File details to check the sizes and SHA-256 fingerprints. Review the changed, inserted and deleted bytes in the hex view.

  3. 03

Click a byte to read it in the data inspector, or enter a hexadecimal or decimal offset to go straight to it.
